Dear MOSAIC Families,

Last week, I shared with you how we are implementing Zones of Regulation at MOSAIC Elementary. This week, I want to focus on the Seven Habits of Happy Kids and how this is being incorporated into our daily routines at MOSAIC. The seven habits focus around the principles of planning ahead, respecting others, teamwork, responsibility, and balance. The seven effective habits are:

-  Be Proactive

-  Begin with the end in mind

-  Put first things first

-  Think win-win

-  Seek first to understand, then be understood

-  Synergize

-  Sharpen the saw

We will focus on one of the habits each month throughout the school year. For September, the studios have been discussing what it means to be proactive. We started out the month with an assembly in the gym about the seven habits and more specifically, being proactive. Through September, students continued to receive lessons in their studios about being proactive at school and at home. For October, we will begin discussing “Begin with the end in mind,” and how it is important to always have a plan.

When talking with your children about their school day, be sure to ask them how they have been proactive at school and how they can demonstrate the same responsibilities at home. Once again, connecting school responsibilities with home responsibilities has a big impact on student success!

Volunteer Opportunities

We have several projects in need of completion at MOSAIC. We are calling all volunteers who are willing to help. Below is a list of the three separate projects.

1.)    Build portable storage containers for Mr. Schulte and the PE studio.

2.)    Help build and install cabinets and storage units in our Design Studio

3.)    Volunteer to assist with the building of the outdoor classroom project

PE Storage Containers

Mr. Schulte is in need of several containers to store various PE supplies. The containers need to be large, durable and most importantly, portable. If you are interested in fabricating storage units, please contact Mr. Schulte at schulteb@msdr9.org.

Design Studio

With the support of MOSAIC’s PTO, we were able to purchase cabinets, furniture and supplies to create the MOSAIC Design Studio. The cabinets/storage units were purchased from IKEA. Most of the work to take place in the Design Studio is putting the items purchased from IKEA together and installing them together.  I imagine there will be very little fabrication. Please contact me at sclark@msdr9.org if you are interested in helping with the Design Studio.

Outdoor Classroom Project

The outdoor classroom project will take place on two weekend dates, November 3rd and November 10th from 9am-1pm. Please read the descriptions below and sign up for a specific role and date. Thank you!

Site Prep: Volunteers will layout the project on the site at MOSAIC Elementary.  Dig holes and trenches for the footings.  Mix and place concrete in Sonotube footings.  Useful skills for volunteers: be good with a tape measure and able to read plans.  Strong back for digging and mixing concrete.  Some heavy lifting will be required for this team.

Prefabrication: Volunteers will work at the MAKES lab at South Tech to cut lumber to dimension and assemble planter boxes and prepare parts for the vertical garden wall and seating.  Useful skills for volunteers: Be good with a tape measure, cordless drill.  Woodworking and carpentry experience is a plus. Some moderate lifting will be required for this team.

Installation: Volunteers will meet at MOSAIC Elementary to assemble and install the vertical garden wall, seating, and planter boxes, and add soil to planter boxes.  Useful skills for volunteers: Plan reading, be good with a tape measure, cordless drill, hammer and nails, circular saw.  Woodworking and carpentry experience is a plus.  Some heavy lifting will be required for this team.

Gardening: Volunteers will add soil, weed, and plant a variety of flowers and native perennial plants.  Useful skills for volunteers: experience with planting and gardening.  Some moderate lifting will be required.
